In this session teachers will be trained on basic economic concepts, stock market investing principles in order to train students how to use the website and participate in the program.  There will be a lecture, demonstration, question and answer session and guided exercises.  This session carries 0.5 CEU credits for teachers Understanding by design is a new program which the Mississippi Department of Education is promoting.  It was written by Dr. Grant Wiggins and is especially tailored for Mississippi.  Understanding by Design focuses around students' really understanding what they have learned and the ability to transfer or apply knowledge.  It focuses on essential questions, big ideas, and valuable assessments.  The curriculum framer is an online set of curriculum guides including all components of the math and language arts frameworks for Mississippi.  In this training participants will gain knowledge of how to teach for understanding and how to use the framer to gain valuable lesson plans. This session carries 0.6 CEU credit for teachers.  Enrollment is strictly limited to 25 participant for this session and will be accepted on a first come-first serve basis.
This one day training is designed to help assistant teachers and paraprofessionals in understanding their role, and utilizing that information to increase student performance and instructional delivery.  During the training session, the participants will utilize a variety of learning strategies including hands-on activities, viewing instructional videos, listening to lectures, and participation in group discussion. The Phonics training focuses on providing participants with a thorough knowledge base of phonics.  During the one-day training, the participants will develop an understanding of the phonics conclusions derived from current research and resources for teaching strategies to facilitate the development of phonics.  The session will conclude with additional hands-on activities to demonstrate how the fine arts can easily be integrated into instruction to support the development of phonics in children.  This session carries 0.6 CEU credits for teachers and 5.0 SEMI credits for career level administrators.
In an effort to assist school districts with the implementation of Response to Intervention (RtI), the Mississippi Department of Education has developed an in-depth training on Tier 1.  This training consists of four two day training modules.  Module 1 and 2 will be conducted during the Fall of 2008.Module 1 includes an overview of RtI with the primary focus on universal screening to assist school districts with identifying struggling students who may need interventions and provide strategies to determine he effectiveness of Tier 1.  The following four essential elements of Tier 1 will be addressed. 1.Universal screening of early literacy skills, oral reading fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. 2.Universal screening of early numeracy skills, math fluency, and reasoning 3.Universal screening of students who will be taking the Subject Area Test. 4.Universal screening of behavior. Module 2 will include detailed information on effective instruction, differentiated instructional strategies, and behavior management.District teams of three may apply for one training site.  The MDE requests that district instructional leaders including the superintendent, assistant superintendent/curriculum coordinator, and school psychologist or instructional interventionist attend this training.  Teams should not include individuals whose primary responsibility is special education.  Due to limited space, districts will not be allowed to send more than three participants.  SEMI credits and CEU’s will be available only for participants who complete both Modules 1 and 2.. The United States is a democratic society that values the diversity of its citizens and depends upon their participation in civic life.  This curriculum guide is designed to help educators instruct young people on the importance of participating in civic life, while providing methods and strategies to facilitate and promote civic engagement.  The methods and strategies for civic engagement provided in this guide draw from Mississippi civil rights history, specifically the life of Mississippian Fannie Lou Hamer.  Ms. Hamer’s work in the civil rights movement provides vivid examples of how average citizens can create change through civic engagement.
Formally the 3-Tier Reading Model holds promise for reducing the overall reading problems by providing intensive early intervention for the students most at-risk for reading difficulty.  It consists of three tiers of levels of reading instruction.  Tier 1: Core Classroom Reading Instruction, Tier II: Supplemental Instruction, Tier III: Instruction for Intensive Intervention.  This model will make a highly significant contribution to the knowledge base on preventing reading disabilities through effectively early reading instruction.  This session carries 0.6 CEU credits for teachers or 5.0 SEMI credits for career level administrators. This one day training is designed for teachers and administrators.  The participants will receive valuable information on the use of curriculum based learning centers in the classroom.  During the training, participants will review the philosophy of learning centers, explore room designs and center arrangements, and discuss implementation of learning centers and classroom management.  The learning center training will provide the opportunity for participants to use hands-on activities and design lessons that connect to the Mississippi Language Arts Framework.  This session carries 0.6 CEU credits for teachers or 5.0 SEMI credits for career level administrators.

The Academies are build on scientifically based components that include explicit and systematic instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.  The Academies will highlight grouping, monitoring student progress to form instruction, and providing interventions for struggling readers.  This session carries 2.4 CEU credits for teachers or 20 SEMI credits for career level administrators. This one day training is designed for teachers and administrators.  The participants will receive valuable information on the use of curriculum based learning centers in the classroom. The goal of this workshop is to highlight free online resources that are of the highest quality and educational value.  Delta State's reference librarians will guide participants through the state funded MAGNOLIA databases as well as other health, science, and government resources that are available throught the internet.  Intructors will combine lecture and interactive activities.  Since all participants will have access to computers, much of the workshop will be "hands-on". Project WET activities engage participants with hands-on interdisciplinary activities that teach important lessons about water.  This workshop promotes critical thinking and problem solving skills. This module “Ensuring a Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum” was developed so that participants will know and be able to understand the components of a viable curriculum, demonstrate how standards and Mississippi frameworks are essential to curriculum design, understand curriculum design and understand the alignment between curriculum frameworks and assessments.  This module is only open to school administrators and carries 10 SEMI credits and Orientation for School Leaders (OSL) credit.
